A challenging element that has been added to Civilization 7 is the Plague. Not only are these potential epidemics tough to deal with but they also take away much of the happiness of your population, which is the most important aspect of maintaining a Civilization.
This article will tell you all about the Plague in Civilization 7, including how you can spot it and how you should ideally deal with it.
What Is The Plague In Civilization 7?

Much like in real history, the Plague in Civilization 7 usually occurs during the Exploration Age, when your units come into contact with other, distant civilizations. Your ships and Units can carry these diseases and bring them back to your Settlements, which can cause them to spread among the common people rapidly.
Thankfully the Plague is mostly restricted to the Exploration Age and you are mostly susceptible to it if you are exploring far-off Civilizations a lot. You can also be infected with the Plague due to certain Crisis Events, which can occur randomly throughout the Age.
You will be able to tell that your Settlements have been infected with the Plague if you see green smoke clouds engulfing the cities and towns. You can then check their status to see if your population is in unrest which will confirm whether the Plague has taken over them.
How To Cure The Plague In Civilization 7

The Plague can be a potential game-ender if you don’t deal with it in time and leave it to fix itself. Your settlements will be unproductive till you completely cure the plague and it can kill your Units and cause your population to die down if not dealt with.
To fix the Plague you will need to produce Physicians, who look like real-life Witch Doctors and send them to the Plague-infected Settlement. A Physician can be produced almost halfway through the Exploration Age which will line up almost perfectly with the time when you might have to deal with the Plague. Once you have sent a Physician to your Settlement, you can click on them and select the option to cure the settlement.
The Physician will deal with the Plague slowly and it will be cured after a few turns. You can also create up to three Physicians and send them to the different Plague-infected Settlements if required. While using a Physician will cure the Plague and stop it from spreading, there will still be certain problems you will need to deal with in the aftermath of the Plague.
How To Recover Happiness In Civilization 7

The most important issue you will be left with after the Plague is that your Settlements will be very low on Happiness, which will in turn lower their productivity. This can be very detrimental to your civilization and you should work on bringing the Happiness levels up as soon as possible.
Some of the ways to recover the Happiness of your Settlement in Civilization 7 are:
- Use the Resource Management Menu to increase the amount of Happiness provided to Plague-infected towns and cities. You should increase the intake of Resources such as Pearls, Horses, Dates & Dyes as they will be able to supply your population with a lot more Happiness when compared to other Resources.
- Create more Buildings such as Temples or Inns. While this option isn’t as effective as the first one, it will still provide you with a steady input of Happiness which can be useful in tough times.
- Check for social policies that can help: the Rites & Rituals one, for example, increase Happiness by +2 to all settlements.
- Restore any tiles and Units that have been destroyed by the Plague. This applies especially to regular Military Units and Commanders who might have died as a result of the disease. Replacing these Units will make Happiness levels go up significantly and can be crucial in preventing your Citizens from entering another state of Unrest.
While playing the game is fun, there are some mods that add much required changes to the interface, and some that give resources that much more easily. Check our guide on the best mods for Civ VII and see if there are a few that you want to activate when playing.
